SCOSS (Sustainability Coalition for Open Science Services)

Speaker: Vanessa Proudman, SPARC Europe – Director

Title: SCOSS: Collectively funding essential Open Science Infrastructure

Description: Librarians are responsible for making as much high quality information accessible to their patrons as possible, within the strict boundaries of what they can afford to pay. The rise of open access also grew out of the scholarly communications crisis, which saw ever increasing content costs, driven by the concentration of commercial publishing, within the context of tightly limited library budgets. While information may want to be free, it costs money to create, curate, disseminate and sustain. Open infrastructure provides the foundation for keeping costs down and quality high, ensuring community-driven development, and avoiding corporate acquisition. This session shares experiences on how one initiative, SCOSS, aims to make it easier to keep costs down and keep OS infrastructure community-owned rather than proprietary.
